The first Chaparral, a conventional front engined vehicle, was built by Dick Troutman and Tom Barnes in 1961.

Chaparral was the first to effectively introduce air intakes and spoilers ranging from the wings attached to the first two models of the type wing 'flipper' controlled by the driver in the 2E model looking remarkably different ways throughout the process even the most idealistic Hall inspired creation, the 2J, a car that will always be known as the "vacuum", and was the forerunner of the modern car "ground effect". Using a semi-automatic box Jim Hall transmission in one of the cars of Chaparral had permitted flexibility in the use of adjustable aerodynamic devices. The development of the Chaparral cars to race cars were key changes in the 60 and 70, both aerodynamics and tires. Jim Hall formed with his wit taught to approach problems in a methodical and access to Chevrolet engineering team way and Firestone making revolutionary changes in aerodynamics making great efforts for empiric treatment of racing cars, making her art as an empirical science.

In 2005, in partnership with his old Chevrolet R&D friend Jim Musser, Hall starts a new venture with the 2E Continuation Series.

The Chaparral 2E Continuation Series is the continued production of an innovative racing marvel built nearly 40 years earlier and constructed from the original engineering plans, using the original body molds, by the same people, operating under the same venerable nameplate, with the continued energy and passion that inspired the creation of its legacy.

The continuation car is a perfect replica of a 2E. Currently, it runs with a 350-cubic-inch aluminum-block Chevy V-8 mated to a three-speed transmission. The engine gives 524 hp @5600 rpm and 574 pound-feet of torque at 4200 rpm.
