The idea of solhybridbilen is to create a more environmentally friendly means of transport that can compete with conventional cars. Solhybridbilen gets its energy from solar cells for short trips and on long trips supplemented by energy from a small diesel engine. All driving under 50 km / h going on with energy from solar cells. Outside urban areas starting the internal combustion engine that can get the car to 130 km / h with acceleration from 0-100 km / h in under 15 seconds.

The project is a demonstration project, supported by the Council for Recycling and Cleaner Technology, DEA, business promotion and Traffic Authority, and several private sponsors, who also helped to ensure that the project could be implemented. The project has created the knowledge and experience required to start a genuine production of solhybridbiler.

The prototype - Connector 2001 - is constructed of plastic materials and is therefore lighter than today's cars. Its lighter weight, less drag and lower rolling resistance makes it possible to run 5-8000 miles per year, solely on the experience solar energy.

The project has resulted in the following conclusions

It is realistic to exploit solar cells directly mounted on the cars to drive, especially to cover shorter trips nearby. This assumes that the cars are optimized for lowest power, ie lowest possible weight, air resistance, rolling resistance and transmission losses.
To the car can be used for longer trips and for it to be heated in the winter is the most realistic to provide it with a small internal combustion engine. Batteries suitable for clean electric power is today and in the near future to be too big, too heavy and too expensive to offer a real alternative.

Utilization of modern plastics technology makes it possible to build a car that is much easier, stainless and more secure than today's cars. The materials used to give the car a lifetime of at least 20 years after which they can be recycled into new items.
Although solar cells are flat, it has been possible to integrate some 6 m2 surface of the car without affecting the appearance and usability negatively. Solar cell area necessitates that the car will have a certain size but this leads to significant improvements for safety and comfort.

With the selected engines will Solhybridbilen benefits roughly equivalent to today's cars. It will be manufactured at a price that will initially be well above usual cars. In the long term the price will drop to just over usual cars in line with the decline in solar prices and the produced quantities.

FACTS ABOUT THE CONNECTOR 2001
• Easy, safe and comfortable
• 3 + 3 seater station wagon
• Energy from solar to electric motor and vegetable oil for a diesel engine.
• On a normal working day, the solar cells could supply enough power to drive 10 - 30 km pollution-free for most of the year. And 30-40 km on one liter of vegetable oil.
• Dimensions: 5 m long, 2 m wide and 1.4 m high, with a ground clearance of 0.3 m Weight app. 600 kg.
• Top speed: 130 km / h
• The electric motor is an asynchronous motor with an output of 20 kW and vegetable oil engine is a twin cylinder 16 kW engine.
• The batteries are sealed lithium batteries and provides an output of 3.7 kWh enough about 30 km drive.
• The vehicle is constructed of fiberglass-reinforced thermoplastic, a total of 6 parts, with a view to low maintenance.
• The instrumentation is via a PC and a so-called HUD, Head Up Display.
