Central Research Automobile and Engine Institute "NAMI" (SSC RF FSUE "us") - a leading scientific organization of the Russian Federation in the field of automotive industry.

Scientific Engine Institute was established March 14, 1920 on the basis of scientific Automotive Laboratory (NAL) for scientific and technical department of the Supreme Economic Council, which was established October 16, 1918. Since 1924 the Institute has authorized the purchase of imported vehicles. By 1927, developed the first independent car NAMI-1 (the first car in the USSR).

In 1930 the Institute has become a leading design units of the Soviet automobile industry. At this time, have been developed and put into production the first domestic trolleys, created several models of tractors and trucks. For the needs of the Red Army is actively developed semi-tracked model, armored cars

From 1931 to 1946, was known as the Scientific autotractor Institute (NATI)

At the beginning of 1946 in connection with the transfer of the tractor industry to the Ministry of Agricultural Engineering NATI was divided into two parts. Car part remained in charge of Minavtoproma and was transformed into a Research Automobile and Engine Institute (NAMI). Tractor part transferred Minselhozmashu and at its base is organized union NATI (NATI).

The institute was constructed several motors, which served as the basis for production models. However, many promising design solutions could not be quickly mastered the domestic industry. For example, the development of front-wheel drive in the US began in the years 1966-1967, and the first front wheel drive car series launched in the Soviet Union only in the 1980s. In the same period, and began development of automatic gearbox for cars

In 2003, the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology of Russia accredited us as the Testing Centre for Car Manufacturing Products (ITSAI), which has become is a technical service with the right testing ECE Regulation.

NAMI is the representative of the Russian Federation on the Technical Committee 22 "Road transport" International Organization for Standardization.
