 Saab is a Swedish company motorsport and aviation founded in Linköping in 1937. His name was an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan AB SA of airplanes Swedes, where concerns AB Aktiebolag (corporation in Swedish), and was written as SAAB. From changes in company policy in 1990, the current name is Saab AB.

The company, originally dedicated to the manufacture of aircraft, began to diversify their productions and late 1940's automotive division, Saab Automobile was established. The car division was located in the city of Trollhättan. The first car was the Saab 92001, which appeared on June 10, 1947. The company earned a reputation for creating safe and reliable vehicles.

In December 2011, Saab Automobile was officially declared bankrupt.
