Excellent Research for Energy Transition and Electro-Mobility: Germany's leading Institutes of Technology (TU9) at Hannover Messe 2014

The TU9 universities will be jointly represented at this year’s Hannover Messe: From 7th to 11th April international visitors to the world’s leading trade fair for industrial technology will be able to find out about current research projects at Germany’s leading Institutes of Technology - TU9. As a partner on the stand of VDI (the Association of German Engineers), TU9 is presenting projects from the fields of sustainable energy use and electro-mobility.

The TU9 universities stand for strength in research, and innovation: their scientists achieve outstanding results - in both fundamental research and applied research projects. One example of this is being presented by TU9 at Hannover Messe 2014 to international trade visitors: an ultra-lightweight electric car, which was developed as part of the InEco®-Project by scientists from TU Dresden in cooperation with experts from the Leichtbau-Zentrum Sachsen GmbH (LZS) and ThyssenKrupp AG.

The electric car of the future combines sporty driving pleasure and environmentally-friendly energy use

Inspired by political and scientific debates on the topic of electro-mobility, members of the InEco®-Research Project sought an innovative, forward-looking and sustainable approach. The project partners scrutinized the entire vehicle system. The result of this holistic approach is a generic electric car in an integral composite design. The scientists were able to significantly reduce the number of vehicle components, thus exploiting the lightweight potential to a high degree.

To illustrate what the electric car of the future could look like, members of the InEco®-Project implemented their innovative vehicle design by constructing a four-seater demonstrator car for urban use. With a total weight of only 900 kilograms – with all components including the battery – the research car combines sporty driving pleasure and environmentally-friendly energy use, and cost-attractive construction design with an elegant appearance.

The great challenges for the future are on the scientific agenda of the TU9 universities

Research results like those obtained through the InEco®-Project show that the TU9 universities are important scientific players in Germany’s high-tech industries. With a large number of research projects on efficient and resource-saving forms of mobility, as well as generation and storage of energy, they make a vital contribution to the energy transition.

The other great challenges for the future are also on the scientific agenda of the TU9 universities: Research is being conducted into climate issues and improving protection against natural and environmental catastrophes. In projects from the fields of information and communication, scientists focus on the needs of citizens and industry in a globalised world.

Technical universities are economic driving forces and create jobs in Germany

With excellent opportunities for studying, and outstanding research results, the TU9 universities play a key role in securing Germany’s position as a centre of technology. As economic driving forces, they are a key factor for the international competitiveness of German industry: Technical universities secure and create jobs.
